How to use these Christmas worksheets
Five pages make an easy one-week plan for December. Do one page a day, or two short ones if your child asks for more:
- Day 1: Count and Write. Count the ornaments in each ten frame and write the number. Ask, "How many more to make 10?" for a bonus challenge.
- Day 2: Color by Sum. Solve each sum, then color the box using the key at the top. The finished picture is a Christmas tree, so your child can check their own work.
- Day 3: Story Problems. Read each problem aloud. Your child counts the pictures, writes the numbers, and finds how many in all. Act them out with real gifts or cookies if you have them.
- Day 4: Beginning Sounds. Say each picture name slowly and stretch the first sound: b-b-bell. Then circle the letter.
- Day 5: Read and Trace. Read each sentence together, trace it, then write it on the line. Point to each word as you read.
Ideas to make it more fun
- Ornament counting. Count real ornaments as you decorate, or use pom-poms on the ten frames before writing.
- Cookie math. Bake (or pretend to bake) and turn story problem 3 into a real one: we bake 6 cookies, then 3 more.
- Sound hunt. After the beginning sounds page, find something in the house for each letter: b for bow, t for tree.
- Sentence of the day. Write one of the read-and-trace sentences on a card and leave it by the tree for your child to read each morning.
- Laminate and reuse. Put a page in a sheet protector so siblings can take turns with a dry-erase marker.
What skills the pages cover
- Number sense: counting to 10 on ten frames and writing the numeral.
- Addition within 10: 81 small sums on the color-by-sum tree, plus 3 picture story problems.
- Phonics: hearing and naming beginning sounds.
- Reading and handwriting: short sentences with CVC words and sight words (I see a red hat. The dog can sit.).
For a younger child, cut the color-by-sum page in half and do it over two days. For an older child, ask them to write their own story problem using the same pictures.
Keeping December learning light
December is busy, and that's fine. A worksheet or two in the morning, a Christmas read-aloud and some baking or crafting is a full, happy school day for a 5-year-old. If you'd like a bigger plan, our Christmas unit study ideas include a simple 2-week schedule, and our kindergarten morning work ideas show how to build a short daily routine.
