Free CVC Words Worksheets for Kindergarten
By Forge Learning · October 24, 2026
CVC words are three-letter words with a consonant, a vowel and a consonant: cat, sun, pig. They are the first words most children can sound out on their own, because every letter makes its usual sound. That makes CVC practice the bridge between knowing letter sounds and actually reading.
What is a CVC word?
CVC stands for consonant-vowel-consonant. In a CVC word the middle vowel is short: the a in cat sounds like /a/, not like the a in cake. Once a child can blend c-a-t into cat, they can read hundreds of words by changing one letter at a time.
Word families to teach first
Teaching by word family — words that share an ending — lets a child read a whole set after learning one pattern. Start with these, in roughly this order:
- -at family: cat, hat, mat, sat, bat, rat
- -an family: can, fan, man, pan, ran
- -ap family: cap, map, tap, nap
- -et family: pet, net, wet, jet
- -en family: pen, hen, ten, men
- -ip family: pip, lip, sip, dip
- -it family: sit, hit, bit, fit
- -ot family: hot, pot, dot, cot
- -ug family: bug, hug, rug, tug
- -ub family: cub, tub, rub, hub
How to practice CVC words
- Sound it out slowly: point to each letter, say each sound, then blend — c-a-t, cat.
- Change one letter: write cat, then change the c to h and read hat. This is the fastest way to grow a reading vocabulary.
- Mix reading and writing: after reading a family, ask your child to write two of the words from memory.
- Keep sessions short: 10 minutes of CVC work plus a read-aloud beats a long worksheet slog.
