What are sight words?
Sight words are common words that children learn to read quickly and automatically, like the, and, I and see. Some can be sounded out and some can't, but all of them show up so often that recognizing them fast makes reading smoother. The Dolch list is one well-known set; its first level, the pre-primer list, has 40 words, and these five come from it.
Sight words work best alongside phonics, not instead of it. Keep practicing letter sounds and blending short words while your child learns these.
A simple one-word-a-day routine
Each page follows the same five steps, so your child knows what to do after the first day:
- Trace it three times, saying each letter.
- Write it on your own, then read it aloud.
- Read it in a short sentence, like "I can jump." Point under each word.
- Find and circle the word in the grid, then count how many and write the number.
- Color it. Color the big bubble word and say it one more time.
Do one page a day for a week, in this order: I, can, see, the, and. By Friday your child can read whole sentences like "I can see the cat and the dog."
Sight word games to go with the worksheets
- Word hunt: write the five words on sticky notes and hide them around a room. Your child reads each one they find.
- Flashlight read: tape the words to a wall, turn off the lights and shine a flashlight on one word at a time.
- Build it: make the word with magnetic letters, play dough or blocks.
- Book search: open a favorite picture book and look for the word of the day. Count how many times it appears.
- Sentence strips: write the five words on cards and arrange them into silly sentences.
How many sight words should a kindergartner know?
It depends on your child and your curriculum, and there's no single number every child must reach. Many kindergarten programs work through a list of about 20 to 50 high-frequency words over the year. Go at your child's pace: add a new word once the last few feel easy, and keep reviewing old ones. If a word is tricky, slow down and spend a few more days on it.
Tips for success
- Keep it short: 5 to 10 minutes a day is enough.
- Review often. Read the week's words on a card each morning before adding a new one.
- Celebrate progress. Put a sticker or star by each word your child can read without help.
- Read aloud every day. Children learn sight words fastest when they see them again and again in real books.
